Yomping the nations

Yomping the Nations is a huge national competition, which helps students from throughout the UK gain the necessary skills and confidence to embark on their perfect career.

The competition had over 10,000 entrants from 101 universities throughout England and I was selected as one of the judges of the final of this amazing business competition.

The final was hosted by Manchester Metropolitan University at the famous Lancashire County Cricket Club in Old Trafford, Manchester and assessed by a highly experienced panel of volunteer judges. The national competition was won by a group of Geographers from the University of Plymouth (pictured above) with a business concept called Uni-find. They received £2,000 in cash.. YES CASH!

I thought it was an amazing, well run event which gave me great faith in the future of business in the UK. In fact I would employ tomorrow a few of those I met at the final…

   Its great to see that the support for the event hasn’t just ended with the final. This was a really good thing for me and all the young people involved nationwide. I went to university to open some windows and Yomp has given me a whole new house to investigate!

   PS. Anyone reading this I’m the guy in the black shirt and white tie…

   Well, the phone hasn’t stopped and hopefully the media will take heed of this astronmical achievement!

   The University of Plymouth is hugely proud of its team of Geographers, and rightly so as the team are adaptable, flexible and resourceful. The broad range of skills developed thoughout the degree programme, utilised effectively in the earlier stages of this competition, have produced a well-rounded team. The team were determined and had a strong sense of competition, they are down to earth and likeable with an enthusiastic attitude. Whilst being self-assured and resourceful the team were aware of their knowledge limitations and gratefully accepted the advice of the experts, most notably Simon.”

   It was a brilliant and very intense event. Simon was a star, punching the air when the result was announced. It was uplifting to see what the students can do when faced with a real challenge.

   I had the privilege of recruiting and looking after the 130 business experts for Yomping the Nations on behalf of The Working Knowledge Group who organise the event.  We always strive to get a good mix of experience, expertise, outlook and personality amongst the 10-12 experts at each of the 12 events; no small task!  Simon was a fantastic expert; passionate, accessible and knowledgeable.  It is no surprise he has had a lasting impact on many of the students that met him.  Thank you once again.

   I think this event opened me up for my life in UK in a very good way, going into such a competition is always about having fun and meeting new people…winning is an added bonus which we didn’t get…but i learned a lot and made new friends…having this kind of an experience under my belt in the 1st yr is great!!!
