The expression ‘a dog is a man’s best friend’ is often used, but the fact of the matter is, it’s true. Of course we have never owned a dog, but a few hairy princesses.

In February 2011, our lovely faithful companion Beavis left us and the family were devastated. However I know in her very serene and purposeful mind she was ready to move on and like me, getting old didn’t really suit her.
The picture above was taken just off Port St Mary ledges – she loved the sea and living on the Island. We will never forget you, beautiful princess.
We had to fill the physical and emotional hole quickly and after some in-depth research, Angela found High House Labradors, a very well respected breeder in Kendal. Regular email updates from co-owner Jan Atkinson created increasing excitement which became almost unbearable when we received pictures following her birth.
Jan & Dom recommended we speak to Brian Duggan who lives on the Island having recently bought two Labrador’s from them. We called and he kindly brought his dogs around to show us giving a first hand experience of his dealings with this fine kennels.

Angela and Joe collected her on May 13th and following a lot of heated family discussion, we called her by her kennel name, Highhouse Hummock (that’s Hummock for short).
I have to say that High House are fantastic and really care. The communication, documentation and ‘vetting’ process (thats was to make sure we were suitable – excuse the pun) was totally excellent .
All animals have personality, but I have never seen such charisma. She is very intelligent, but also more sensitive than any other we have owned.
Determined to have her well trained, we (that’s Hummock and I) have recently joined the Isle of Man Gundog Society and have attended our first training sessions.
Ringing in my ears is “It’s the owner that need training, not the dog” – so true and will tell you how it all pans out!
Owning a beautiful Labrador is #1 in my 100 best things…

‘The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he’s always doing both.’
