I have been privileged to know the O-Ring King for a few years now. He is one of life’s great characters as well as a generally funny and knowledgeable bloke. Besides being the Equipment Officer in our dive club (RVSAC) he helps my mum out with broken washing machines, light-bulbs and other domestic stuff that I can’t do or haven’t the time to sort out…
On September 19th 1998 having been beaten by Tropical Storm Vicki, The Princess Of The Orient, a 200m long 13,734 ton ferry, sank 40 miles south of Manila on its way to Cebu. She now rests in 125m of water and is the final resting place of some 150 souls that were lost that night. In the early 2000s world deep diving record holder John Bennett and Ron Loos, of Atlantis Tech in the Philippines, were the first two explorers to dive her. Since that time only 7 other people had had the honour of seeing the ‘Princess’. A guest article by Mike Taylor.
The concept for Triton Oceanic began during a week of technical diving in Chu’uk Lagoon in 2007 and was initially formed for the purpose of promoting the team’s Project Kongō expedition, to find and document the wreck of the IJN Kongō, a 36,000-ton battleship sunk off Formosa.
I have loads of people asking me what books to read and websites to visit in preparation for First Class Diver and National Instructor. Here is a selection of what’s on my shelf. If you have the time also take a look at my useful links for divers.
Before I started the First Class Diver preparation, I has no idea the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) existed. Big pity as it would have really helped me! After finishing my National Instructor Examination (phew) and with all this serious exploration planned, I decided that I needed to get some further knowledge pronto and signed up for the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) combined introduction and part one course.
Anyone reading this article will probably think I am mad for standing as a candidate for the BSAC councils positions available this year. Mad, yes… Passionate about the organisation, certainly; take a look at my BSAC profile.

‘The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he’s always doing both.’
James A. Michener (1907-1997)
